The Medium – s/t. 1969. Pretty adventurous album for the time and place. Band is from Montreal, though their sound is more similar to the Toronto area. Nice fuzz and 1960s era non-Hammond organ. Mellodramatic vocals can get to be a bit much. Last multi-part track has similarities to Soft Machine “II”. Closest band I could compare them to is the US band Listening (on Vanguard). I actually had an original LP of this in the early 1990s (and this is my first time to hear since). But even in those days, The Medium was a collectors prize, and I just couldn’t justify holding onto it for the price. But it would be worth the price of a CD, if anyone decides to release it. Technically it would probably go to ProgQuebec, but it’s pretty far musically from their standard issue. Maybe someone like Gear Fab will take a shot. Heck they did Ouba, so why not?
The Tea Company - Come and Have Some Tea with the Tea Company. 1968. This band puts the psych in psychedelic. One of the more freaky albums from the era, especially for a mainstream label (on Smash). Lots of experimental studio effects and noisy avant guitar bits amongst the usual song craft of 1968. A mite untogether, but certainly a fascinating listen. World in Sound have just put this out on CD within the last month. I haven’t heard or seen their version though.
Deep Feeling – s/t. 1971. Not sure what to make of this UK group’s sole album. Musically all over the lot - almost a progressive rock take on an easy listening album. Maybe it’s their version of ‘Classical Gas’ that made me think of that. Definitely an interesting album. Some straight blues and rock-n-roll as well. A Japanese CD came out many years ago and is long OOP.
