Tomasz Stanko - Purple Sun. 1973. Legendary Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko weighs in with this massive Miles Davis styled funkoid fusion effort. Looks like the uptight Communists couldn’t repress the energy on display here. Wah wah guitar, blasting trumpet (very un-Miles like in fact), soaring violin, skronky sax, flute, pissed off drums, intense stand up bass. As if to say “Here, stuff that pierogi up your ass.†No brainer pickup for the Kozmigroov lover amongst your close knit.
Berits Halsband – s/t. 1975. Speaking of trumpet fronted groups, this may be the best of them all when talking progressive rock. Fresh off the press full review can be found here
Mahjun – Happy French Band. 1978. One of those most accurate titles in the history of rock. Mahjun are indeed a happy French band and their brand of hilarity is evident throughout the disc. They like to mix cabaret, barbershop, burlesque, hoedown, carnival and vaudeville with heavy electric blues, funk, jazz, even symphonic rock. For those that like the zanier side of the original RIO/avant prog movement ala Etron Fou Leloublan, Zamla Mammaz Manna or Hamster Theatre. File under “silly progâ€.
