The Rolling Stones - Marquee Club 3/26/71 (DVD)

The Stones on this are a slicked up and horn section-augmented group that I like quite a bit less to the down and dirty Stones and I got a flash of this almost instantly as this started up. I was a bit surprised, as well, that I didn’t recognize a lot of the music from this given that I’m pretty familair with the band’s repetoire up to this point, I wondered if there was, perhaps, some slant to this show that I was clueless about. In fact most of what I did recognize was later in the set, but by that time I was a bit worn out. Reminds me a little of Van Morrison’s similar attempts at just around the same time.

Marillion - The Rave, Milwaukee, WI 9/20/97 (DVD)

Wasn’t too long ago I watched a Hogarth-fronted Marillion show from around the Holidays in Eden album, the one that, at the time, made me hang it up on the band, even if looks more like a rut in the road at this point. This video would go far to demonstrate this as it’s a far better document, even if Marillion will always have something of a foof factor that bugs me. By this point there were several songs I’m not familiar with, none of which really blew me away except that I didn’t dislike too many of them either. And then Hogarth doing a couple Straws numbers that he seems to own now even more so than Fish. All presented rather beautifully as a Marillion fans made for Marillion fans type of document. I even kept it!

Weather Report - Forecast: Tomorrow (DVD 4 of 4)

Haven’t gotten to the audio parts of this set yet, but I was pretty curious to see live 78 Weather Report with studio 78 WR on the mind to see if the “better live” condition works for this show like it has for just about every one I’ve heard or seen since they started. It does. While this show isn’t really much of a standout for me material wise, the band’s in quite good form and it’s the first time I’ve actually seen Jaco play, who’s one of those guys I find a bit too busy (then again, it might be that I’ve played with Jaco-inspired bassists whose existence of a soul I’d question). I tend to prefer earlier eras for Shorter and Zawinul, but there’s no mistaking the fine musicianship on display here.
