Stark Naked – s/t. 1971. I don’t know what to make of this obscure album on RCA. I think the group was from New York and disappeared without a trace. Has a gimmicky Roman theme throughout (as interpreted by 1950s epic movies) and they pulled a Brutus here. It’s hard rock meets progressive, and the real selling point is the copious use of piano, not typically found on albums like this. So a hideous rock and roll blues number is followed by a grand piano and jazzy guitar piece. It’s too good to ignore, but not something I froth about either. Your move.

Saqqara Dogs – Thirst. 1987. I‘ve had this album practically since it came out. One of those albums you would discover through Option magazine – where they couldn’t figure what the hell it was and they’d compare it to a band it had nothing in common with. But this listen pointed me to the possible source: David Torn. “Cloud About Mercury” was one of those revelations for anyone that scanned every single record in the mall store hoping for just ONE new album that looked interesting. Saqqara Dogs takes Torn’s loud guitar ethic and throws a little Middle Eastern mysticism into the mix. And you’re not too far from Black Sun Ensemble either – another Option treasure find. This has aged beautifully.

Amphyrite – s/t. 1973. Hey, I have an idea! Let’s get 3 guys in the room and jam on blues tunes. One guy will solo on guitar while the others keep time (sort of). No vocals to get in the way. Or melody either. Sound like something coming out of an Ohio basement? Didn’t guess France did you? Sacre Couer!
